Rain in Uttarakhand

In the wake of a Western Disturbance moving across Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand in a span of 24 hours from 8. 30 am on Sunday has received some rains. For instance, Nainital during this period recorded 21 mm of rain, Dehradun 2.6 mm and Pantnagar 1.4 mm.

These rainfall activities are expected to continue for the next three to four days in the state. During the initial 2 days, moderate rain will be observed at some places. Isolated places may also observe heavy spells. Places lying along the foothills and the lower reaches such as Dehradun, Pantnagar, Nainital, and Mussoorie will be the ones to witness these activities.

A significant increase in the weather activity is expected around August 31, wherein some heavy showers would reappear over the state.

Among the three hilly states, Uttarakhand is the rainiest pocket followed by Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir during the Monsoon season. However, this season it has remained the most deficient right from the beginning of the season.

The last spell of good rain that the state had observed was around August 18, wherein heavy rains had lashed the state causing flood havoc. Incidents of landslides and cloudbursts were also reported during this period.

The heavy downpour did help the state to improve its rainfall statistics by bringing down the rain deficiency to 23%, but in the last 7 days, the weather activities have remained almost quiet with subdued Monsoon conditions. And in the absence of good showers, the deficiency has once again risen by 2% and is standing at 25% as of August 25.

As we are inching towards the fag end of August, Monsoon will gradually start withdrawing from the state, after giving some heavy showers as expected around August 31. By the mid of September, the Southwest Monsoon would go completely silent over the state.
