Rain in Chennai

Since the last one-week, light rains were being recorded over parts of Chennai. However, no heavy spells have been seen here since July 26. Now, we expect rains to increase over North Tamil Nadu including Chennai during the next 24 hours. These rains will be in wake of a Cyclonic Circulation over Coastal Tamil Nadu which at present is around 5.4 km above mean sea level.

Due to its affect, moderate showers with one or two heavy spells will occur over coastal areas of Tamil Nadu during the next 24 hours. Places like Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, and Viluppuram may receive moderate rains with heavy in isolated pockets. Post 24 hours, the weather will once again be dry.

In the month of August, only 15.5 mm of rains have been received against the normal of 126.8 mm of rains. The city is large deficit and seems like in the coming days as well recovery of this deficit seems nearly impossible.

Whereas, in the month of July it surpassed the monthly average of 103.8 mm and recorded around 128 mm of rains.

Tamil Nadu is a rain shadow area and witnesses very less rains during the Southwest Monsoon. Whereas, good rains will be seen during the Northeast Monsoon season.
