The Northeast Monsoon was fairly active over the South Peninsula in the past 24 hours. All the five subdivisions of Northeast Monsoon, namely, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, South Interior Karnataka and Rayalaseema received moderate rainfall. The monsoon showers reached Goa, North Interior and Coastal Karnataka, Telangana and southern parts of Maharashtra. North Tamil Nadu and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh had a bigger share of monsoon activity.
The remnant of a low-pressure area over the Southwest Bay of Bengal (BoB) persists as a low-level cyclonic circulation over the same region. The feeble north-south trough is also marked along the coastline, across Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Under the combined influence of these systems, the northeast monsoon has been active over South India. A strong northeasterly stream, typical of winter monsoon is sweeping the Coromandel Coast. The Eastern Ghats act as triggers to enhance the monsoon activity. Active monsoon conditions will prevail for two more days and decline thereafter.
Capital city Chennai is ideally placed for escalated monsoon activity. Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tambaram and Puducherry along North Tamil Nadu Coast and Ongole, Kavali, Bapatla and Nellore over South Coastal Andhra remain the favourite for intense and stretched weather activity, over the next two days. Today, the intensity and spread of rainfall will be bigger than tomorrow. The extent of weather will shrink from the start of the next week and also shift over the south coastal region. Broad and extended clearance can be expected till short of next weekend, commencing 22nd Nov 2024.
