The northwestern plains of the country right from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, North Rajasthan to West Uttar Pradesh witnessed second spell of winter rains on January 23. These showers brought joy for the inhabitants as it ended the prolonged dry spell.
Last spell of rains was recorded on December 11-12. Thereafter, weather has been dry for the entire region.

These rains could be attributed to the Western Disturbance that affected the Western Himalayas and at the same time, induced a cyclonic circulation over North Rajasthan and adjoining areas of Punjab and Haryana. Also, an easterly trough was also extending from this circulation.
Under the impact of all the above cited weather systems, fairly widespread rain and thundershowers occurred over Punjab, Haryana and West Uttar Pradesh. Furthermore, scattered showers were also observed over Delhi and North Rajasthan. The latter regions also saw some hailstorm activity.

In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Tuesday; Karnal 34 mm, Ludhiana 25 mm, Patiala 18 mm, Hisar 10 mm, Chandigarh 10 mm, Amritsar 7 mm, Rohtak 5 mm, Ambala 4 mm, Delhi (Safdarjung) 4 mm and Faridabad 2 mm.
With these showers, maximum temperatures had dropped significantly to the tune of 6-10 degrees over most parts of Northwest India. In fact, Punjab, parts of Delhi-NCR, Haryana and Northwest Uttar Pradesh witnessed cold day conditions.
Cold day conditions are declared when the day temperatures are either 16˚C or less.
Now, the weather systems have moved away eastwards, paving way for return of cold northerly-northwesterly winds. With these chilly winds blowing straight from snow-clad Himalayas, minimum temperatures have already descended by 2-3 degrees over many parts of Northwest India today.
Weathermen expect minimum temperatures to plunge further, while maximum temperatures would again start mounting due to clear sky and bright sunshine.
Due to the fresh rain activities, humidity levels have also augmented considerably over Northwest India, with which dense fog was observed over North Rajasthan, parts of Haryana and South Delhi.
