The Indo-Gangetic Plains are known for witnessing persistent foggy days in the month of January. However, this season, the weather conditions persisted indifferently over many parts.

The western half of the Indo Gangetic plains have witnessed dense fog in pockets and some of the regions even remained fog-free for the last four to five days. In fact, last week was a fog-free week for Delhi and NCR.

However, East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar continued to remain under a thick layer of fog for the last many days. The fog cover has also suppressed the maximum temperatures, and have likewise curtailed the minimums as well. This has thus resulted in cold day and cold wave conditions to prevail in parts.

The above table clearly depicts that the minimum temperatures recorded in the last 10 days by all these stations are good 3-4 degrees beneath their average monthly minimums. In fact, the night temperatures of Bhagalpur has settled almost 8 degrees below its monthly mean.

However, in the last 24 hours, the minimums have shown a rising trend. Further, there are chances of some more improvement. However, the morning chill over the region with cold wave conditions in a few pockets will continue to prevail.
