Night temperatures have plunged in Delhi once again.  Base observatory at Safdarjung recorded minimum temperature of 16.4°C, dip of straight 3°C from the previous day . Also, this minimum temperature is 5°C below the normal. Earlier, these temperatures had dropped below 20°C in the first week of October, with the lowest minimum of 18.3°C, about 4°C below the average on 03rdOctober.  Such large sway of mercury, within days after the withdrawal of monsoon is not very common.  Repeat of this fluctuating cycle is again likely in the next few days. Night temperatures will climb and fall again between 15th and 20th October.

Significant drop is normally noticed during the 2nd half of the month and in that too, towards the last week of October. First half of the month rarely witness temperatures slide below 20°C.  Normal range of minimum temperature during the start of the month is 22-23°C and drops to 16-17°C at fag end of the month.

An active western disturbance, little early in the season, is likely to approach the northern mountains on 13th night.  The system will have its secondary cyclonic circulation over parts of Punjab and Rajasthan. The system will affect mainly foothills of Punjab and Haryana on 14thOct. The spread of activity will increase in the following 2 days, on 15th & 16th October. Capital city Delhi is expected to have cloudy sky on these two days and intermittent spells of rain and thundershowers are quite likely. The weather activity will reduce in intensity over Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi on 17thOctober. Rainfall belt will shift to parts of Uttar Pradesh on 17thOctober and cover stations like Bulandshahr, Khurja, Aligarh, Hathras, Mathura and Agra.  A freak spell of moderate showers can not be ruled out for  Delhi, as well.  Weather is likely to be  clear on 18thOct over most of these parts.

With the arrival of western disturbance and its off shoot cyclonic circulation, wind pattern will change again.  Moist easterly winds blowing over the capital city and the associated cloud cover will increase the night temperatures. The minimum temperature may rise to low 20’s on 15th & 16thOctober.  Dip in the temperatures and nip in the air is likely, once again, from 18thOctober onward.
