Midway review of Northeast Monsoon

We are halfway through the Northeast Monsoon season and Tamil Nadu and Kerala have been observing good rain. According to the data available with Skymet Meteorology Division in India, Tamil Nadu has observed 328.8 mm of rain against the normal average of 303.9 mm. Similarly Kerala has also received some very good rain. The state has recorded 440.9 mm of rain against the normal average of 410.7 mm.

In Tamil Nadu, Dharmapuri, Dindigul, Tirunelveli and Tiruppur are among the ten districts that have observed excess rain. Only seven districts including Virudhunagar, Vellore, Thiruchirappali observed deficit rain in the state. In Kerala, excess rain was observed in four districts of Ernakulam, Kottayam, Mallapuram and Thrissur, while the remaining ten districts observed normal rain.

The other two sub divisions of Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra Pradesh have witnessed deficit rain. However, it is to be noted that the Northeast Monsoon primarily affects Tamil Nadu and Kerala. So any amount of rain in other subdivisions can be considered surplus.

Adjoining subdivisions of South Interior Karnataka and Coastal Karnataka have also experienced normal rain so far. According to the data available with Skymet, South Interior Karnataka has witnessed 173.1 mm of rain against the normal average of 184.7 mm. Rainfall figures in Coastal Karnataka are also impressive with 228.3 mm of rain being witnessed against the normal of 253.3 mm.
