July is the core Monsoon month for most locations in the country. Heavy to very heavy with extremely heavy rains are seen in most parts with the heaviest falls along the West Coast and Northeast India. This is due to the topography of these areas.
Most parts of Northeast India and the regions along the West Coast are orography oriented. Northeast India is in fact mostly a mountainous terrain.
However, this Monsoon season, excluding the aforementioned regions, we saw heavy rainfall over the plains of Central, East and North India as well. Though these rains varied in amount and spread.
Usually, the intensity of the rainfall is classified as heavy to very heavy if any particular place records rains one and a half times more than its normal. On the other hand, it becomes extremely heavy when it the rainfall is twice more than its normal.
This time, the month of July has been good so far for both North and Central India in terms of giving heavy rains. In the past couple of days, we have seen many plains of North and Central India reporting an above or close to 500 mm of monthly fall.

In general, the plains of Delhi NCR, Punjab and Haryana sees a normal of around 200 mm in the month of July. Meanwhile, rainfall amount of the plains of Bihar, West Bengal, and Nagpur ranges from 250-300 mm in the month.
The table below displays some of the areas that have surpassed their monthly mean by a huge difference:
As per Skymet Weather, a number of Monsoon systems were responsible for driving these heavy rains. While it was a persistent cyclonic circulation over Gujarat that gave heavy rains, the low-pressure area traveling in a westerly direction from the Bay via Madhya Pradesh is the reason for heavy rains over parts of Odisha and Maharashtra.
On the other hand, the isolated pocket of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh received such heavy rains due to the combination of both a cyclonic circulation and a low-pressure area over Northwest Uttar Pradesh and adjoining Madhya Pradesh.
As of now, rains have reduced drastically over parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha. It is just Uttar Pradesh that has and would be receiving some more good Monsoon showers in the coming days.
