Heat wave conditions during May extend to cover large areas including Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Telangana. According to Skymet Meteorology Division, Vidarbha, west Rajasthan and Gujarat experience intense heat during this period. However, in the last couple of days Rajasthan and its adjoining areas have witnessed dust storm activity which has marginally pulled down the temperatures in the region. The day temperatures, which were 4 to 5 degrees above the monthly average are now recording close to normal.
But heat wave conditions have now intensified over parts of Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh and some parts of Telangana and Chhattisgarh. This can be understood from the fact that several places in the region are experiencing day temperatures above 45°C.
For instance, Akola and Nagpur in Maharashtra saw the day temperature settle at 46.2°C and 47°C, respectively on Wednesday. These temperatures are also the season’s highest for the city so far. With 47.4°C as the day temperature, Chandrapur was the hottest place in the country on Wednesday. The all-time highest maximum for the city is 48.3°C.
In Chhattisgarh, the state capital Raipur observed the day temperature settle at 45.5°C, which is 3 degrees above the monthly average. Similarly, on Wednesday Ramagundam and Nizamabad in Telangana recorded 46°C and 46.4°C as the day temperature, respectively. These temperatures were 3 to 4 degrees above the average.
In Karnataka also the day temperatures have been soaring with Gulbarga recording the day temperature a 45°C. In neighbouring Andhra Pradesh Vijayawada recorded 45.4°C as the maximum temperature.
According to Skymet, hot weather conditions are going to prevail in the region for another 3 to 4 days. This could lead to further rise in day temperatures. Some places in the region may even see new records being created.
