Marginal relief from Delhi smog, conditions to improve gradually

November 7, 2016 11:39 AM | Skymet Weather Team

Until Yesterday, Delhi pollution levels were sky rocketing. Thick smog remained suspended throughout the day reducing the visibility. Light winds started blowing yesterday at around 11:00 am, which provided no relief from the smoggy conditions. However, today visibility in Delhi and the NCR region has slightly improved.

Now, winds are likely to pick up pace leading to gradual cleaning of the thick pollution layer. Earlier, an anti-cyclone was persisting over Northwest India which was restricting the flow of dry winds from the northwest direction. A Western Disturbance was also passing through Jammu and Kashmir leading to light variable winds.

Due to these two weather features, the thick layer of smog continued to persist. Now, both the weather systems have become insignificant and moderate dry north westerlies will commence which will help in carrying the thick layer of pollution away.

At present, PM 2.5 levels are still very high. In fact, several areas are witnessing 500+ PM 2.5 levels. Areas including Noida, Anand Vihar, Mathura Road, Lodhi Road, Delhi University and other areas are witnessing hazardous air quality levels.

These winds are likely to persist for the next few days. Thus, gradual decrease is expected in pollution levels during the next few days. However, complete relief from pollution levels is only expected with the occurrence of rain. The unfortunate part is that models are not indicating any rainfall for at least one week.
