People felt unusually cold on Sunday morning in Amritsar and many other parts of North India, as the minimums slipped 3 to 5 degrees below the normal average. Days turned very cool as the maximums also dropped a couple of notches. While, Amritsar recorded a low of 4.8⁰C (5 degrees below normal), Delhi recorded 10⁰C (3 degrees below normal).

“Free flow of northerly winds from the hilly regions of Jammu and Kashmir led to a significant drop in the minimums as well as the maximums, making the weather in North India quite cold for March. However, such low temperatures are not unusual meteorologically. There have been previous records of minimums dropping to 4⁰C or below”, said Samar Chaudhary, meteorologist at Skymet.

Here’s a look at the minimums and maximums in some cities of North India in last 24 hours: Amritsar – 4.8⁰C and 19.6⁰C, Delhi – 10.0⁰C and 20.5⁰C, Hisar – 8.4⁰C, Narnaul - 7⁰C, Ludhiana – 6.2⁰C and Chandigarh – 17.4⁰C.

“Mercury levels in North India are expected to remain below normal, with maximums settling between 22⁰C and 24⁰C and minimums between 6⁰C to 10⁰C for the next two days. Afterwards temperatures will start to rise gradually as we progress further into March.
