Srinagar Rain: March ends with surplus, April to begin with a rainy spell

March 30, 2016 11:33 AM |

Srinagar rainA series of Western Disturbance during March brought good rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir and Srinagar managed to receive rainfall in excess for March. While another Western Disturbance is approaching the hilly states of North India, it will only begin to give rain over these areas by April 1.

The spring months, March and April, off late have become synonymous with the unseasonable rain over plains and hills of North India. While Srinagar used to receive good amount of snowfall in December and January, the erratic weather has increasingly made it impossible for Srinagar to witness white Christmas and white New Year since last two years.

This year in March, light scattered to heavy rainfall continued over Srinagar and adjoining areas. Heavy rainfall that resulted in snowfall and snowfall triggered landslides also gave excess of monthly rainfall to Srinagar. While March usually gives 115 mm of rain, this year Srinagar received 169 mm of rain which is 46% excess than the normal.

Weather accompanied by snow and rain during second half of March was also instrumental in taking the day temperatures several notches than the normal. Wintry chill that predominantly remained missing from Srinagar during winter was once again felt in March.

With another WD approaching, Srinagar and other hilly region of North India is likely to receive light rainfall from tomorrow onwards.
