The state of Maharashtra has four subdivisions. Due to this, large amounts of quantitative variations is observed in terms of rainfall. While some areas of the state record four-digit monthly rains, some pockets only received about 250 mm rainfall in a month.
Usually, heavy rains do not occur over all the sub-divisions at one point of time. Rainfall occurs in patches and at different times. This Monsoon season is likely to be above normal over Maharashtra. However, June was expected to be below par.
This June, Marathwada has emerged to be the best-performing subdivision. In fact, as on June 26, Marathwada has exceeded its monthly normal rainfall by one percent. The region has recorded 122 mm of rain against 120.7 mm.
The rainfall figures during the last two years showcase a horrific picture. June 2014 was deficient by a whopping 79 percent. In fact, July 2014 was also highly rain deficient at 44 percent. Last year, June was good for the entire country with 16 percent surplus rainfall, but Marathwada still ended with 17 percent rain deficiency.
Both June and July showcased a poor performance in 2015. Marathwada received 145 mm rainfall in two months, namely June and July. This year, in just 26 days, the region has received just about 20 mm less than the two months combined in 2015.
More rains are expected to occur over Marathwada. In the coming days, particularly between June 28 and 30, good showers are likely to occur over the region which will take the above-mentioned figures even higher. June is expected to end on a surplus note, after successive deficient June during the last two years.
