Maiden deep depression of the season brewing in Bay of Bengal

The low-pressure area which developed over Northeast Bay of Bengal intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area and now concentrated into a depression. At 5:30 IST today on August 19, it was over Northwest and adjoining the northeast Bay of Bengal and near latitude 20.5 degrees north and longitude 89.7 degrees east, about 310 km south southeast of Balasore 200 km east-southeast of Digha and 210 km East southeast of Sagar Island.

The system will move in a west-northwest direction and will intensify into a deep depression by the afternoon of August 19. It will continue its journey in similar direction between West Bengal and Odisha coast between Balasore and Sagar Island around evening of August 19.

After making landfall it may continue to move in a west-northwest direction across northern parts of Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand towards north Chhattisgarh and northeast Madhya Pradesh. After making landfall, the moisture feed from Bay of Bengal will reduce and the weather system may once again degenerate into depression and thereafter into a well-marked low pressure area while reaching over north East Madhya Pradesh.

During its journey, this weather system will give heavy to very heavy rain over Gangetic West Bengal, North Odisha and South Jharkhand on August 19. Places like 24 South Parganas, Diamond Harbour, Haldia, Nandigram, Poorvi Medinipur, Jhargaon in West Bengal and Baripada, Balasore and Mayurbhanj in Odisha. East and West Singhbhum, Jamshedpur, Chaibasa and Khunti in Jharkhand may receive heavy to very heavy rain.

Many parts of Madhya Pradesh, South Uttar Pradesh, east and Southeast Rajasthan are expected to receive heavy downpour during the journey of this weather system. Other activities will be between August 19 and 23 after lashing many states of India, rain will intensify over South Sindh in Pakistan by August 24 or 25.
