Maharashtra records excess Monsoon rainsThe state of Maharashtra is divided into four sub divisions namely Marathwada, Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan. While Konkan region receives heavy rains during the Southwest Monsoon season, rainfall amounts are comparatively less over the other three subdivisions.

During the last two years, Maharashtra, barring the Konkan region, has been reeling under drought conditions. This year also, Southwest Monsoon made a delayed onset over Maharashtra due to which June ended on a deficit note in Vidarbha and Madhya Maharashtra.

Due to good rains at the end of the month, Marathwada recorded a rainfall surplus of 10 percent. Vidarbha was also fairly alright with a 3 percent rainfall deficiency. However, Madhya Maharashtra was highly rain deficient at 30 percent.

So far, the countrywide rainfall in the month of July has been good. Several weather systems have come up increasing the rainfall activity over many parts of the country. So much so that barring three days, the entire country has witnessed excess rains.

Currently, all the sub divisions of Maharashtra barring Madhya Maharashtra have recorded excess rains. While Konkan has observed a rainfall surplus of 25 percent, the rain surplus of Vidarbha stands at a whopping 52 percent, Marathwada stands at 24 percent surplus. Madhya Maharashtra has also recorded normal rains at 19 percent and is just slightly behind the excess rainfall list.

As of now, Maharashtra along with Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan is one of the best performing regions in terms of rains. Let’s take a look at the table below which shows the rainfall figures of the subdivisions of Maharashtra between June 1 and July 11.

At the beginning of the month, Madhya Maharashtra was deficit at 31 percent. However, by July 5, due to good rains the deficiency dropped to a mere 4 percent. Now, rainfall figures in the sub division have improved significantly and the region is observing a rainfall surplus.
