Updated on December 27, 2015: Cold wave conditions are likely to continue over Vidarbha region, Telangana, and parts of Madhya Pradesh.
Due to continuous inflow of dry and cold northerly winds from the hills of North India, conditions in the above mentioned states are likely to remain unchanged for the next 24 hours at least.
Story first published on December 26, 2015: People across Vidarbha and Marathwada region of Maharashtra and neighbouirng state of Telangana have been reeling under cold wave conditions for the few days. Isolated parts of North Madhya Pradesh are also under the grip of cold wave.
Weather conditions over these places are similar to northwestern plains such as Punjab and Delhi. Present phenomenon can be touted as abnormal as cold wave conditions over these areas very rare. Moreover, people of Telangana or Maharashtra are not use to such cold weather.
According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, dry and cold northerly and northwesterly winds from the hilly region have been reaching up to Maharashtra and Telangana across Madhya Pradesh for the last four to five days.
Due to this continuous flow of icy winds from the snow-clad mountains, maximum temperatures across the region have been settling in mid 20s, which are around 3-5 degrees below normal. While, minimum temperatures are under 10°C and are below normal by 5-7 degrees.
According to Skymet, relief from chilly weather is likely during next 48 hours as a fresh Western Disturbance is affecting Jammu and Kashmir. This will lead to change in wind pattern, resulting in increase in both the day and night temperatures and abatement of cold wave conditions.
