Punjab and Haryana had remained dry since many days as there was an absence of any significant weather system over the region. However, the northern districts of Punjab such as Ludhiana, Patiala, and Chandigarh have received on and off Monsoon showers. While the weather of Haryana mainly remained dry.

As per Skymet Weather, the reason for rains over the northern districts of Punjab can be attributed to the axis of Monsoon trough which is running close to the foothills of Himalayas. As the system is still persisting over the Western Himalayan region, light rains have been recorded at isolated places in both Punjab and Haryana.

In the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Tuesday, Ludhiana in Punjab recorded moderate intensity rain of 27 mm. In the same span of time, Hisar in Haryana recorded 3 mm of rain. These were rainfall activities were highly localized. These rains cannot be linked with any significant weather system.

As the maximums are peaking up in both these states, the humidity levels are also scaling up thus resulting in the development of thunderclouds. Further, these thunderclouds are leading to light traces of rains. Though these rainy spells are for a short duration, covering a limited area.

We expect this type of localized weather conditions to continue over most parts of Haryana and Punjab for the next two to three days. Thereafter around August 20, the spread and intensity of rain are expected to increase over the states.

Chandigarh, Ambala, Hisar, Patiala, and Amritsar may receive good thundershower activities but during that time also rain will not be widespread, it will continue to be in patches. Heavy to very heavy rain is not expected for at least next four to five days.
