In the past 24 hours, scattered rains have been observed in the eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh such as Ghazipur and Varanasi which saw 14 mm and 2 mm of rains, respectively. While isolated rains were a sight in parts of Jhansi.

These on and off rains are expected to continue in East Uttar Pradesh and a Cyclonic Circulation is persisting over Southwest Uttar Pradesh and adjoining Madhya Pradesh. Thus, light to moderate rains is a possibility in the eastern parts. Parts like Varanasi, Ghazipur, Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Gorakhpur, and Azamgarh are expected to witness light to moderate rains for the next two to three days.

On June 23 and 24, light rains are expected at few places in central Uttar Pradesh like Lucknow, Barabanki, Rai Bareilly, Bahraich and Amethi. While, on June 24, isolated light rain might occur over the western parts of the Uttar Pradesh, but these rains would be very light and patchy in nature.

Around June 15, Monsoon hits East Uttar Pradesh but it is still far away and will almost take a week to reach the state. Thus, there is a significant delay of almost two weeks for the onset of Monsoon.

Due to the delay in Monsoon, Uttar Pradesh has received scanty rainfall in the month of June and till date is deficient by a large margin of 77%. While East Uttar Pradesh is deficit by 80% and West Uttar Pradesh is marginally better at 71%. The on and off Western Disturbances and a Cyclonic Circulation over Haryana and its adjoining areas helped in giving rains to the western parts of the state, hence a marginally better performance than the eastern part of the state.
