Low pressure area weakens, rain declines across Tamil Nadu

December 1, 2014 12:19 PM |

Rain in Tamil Nadu Low pressure area prevailing over southwest Bay of Bengal has weakened significantly. With this, the rain over Tamil Nadu has also reduced considerably. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, with the diffusing of system, the Northeast Monsoon has also lost its stream.

In the span of last 24 hours, Nagapattinam recorded 12.6 mm of rainfall, Karaikal 9.4 mm, Palayamkottai 4 mm, Madurai 2mm, Pamban 1.2 mm, Chennai 1.6 mm, Coonoor 0.3 mm and Kanyakumari  0.1 mm of rain.

As per the forecast by Skymet, south peninsular region will not witness any significant weather and most parts of region will go dry for next three to five days, except few isolated places but they will also receive very-very light rain.

The day temperatures which have been settling below normal by 2 to 5 degrees will now crawl back to normal during the next couple of days.

The recent spell of rain over past few days had come as a big relief to South India, particularly in Tamil Nadu and Kerala where Northeast Monsoon had taken a backseat in the last 2-3 weeks.

The cyclonic disturbances, which originate in Bay of Bengal during December, generally head towards  Tamil Nadu coast, giving good rainfall over the state. However, weather system does not indicate arrival of any strong system during the next fortnight.

Northeast Monsoon, unlike the southwest monsoon, gives spot rainfall over the region and has a pattern of becoming active for 4-5 days and weakening thereafter and again repeating the same trend. The monsoon remains active over the region till the mid of December, post which the rainfall takes a backseat.
