Updated on May 14, 2016 12:45 PM (IST): Weather system in Bay of Bengal intensifies, low pressure area to form shortly

The cyclonic circulation over Southwest Bay of Bengal off the Sri Lanka coast has become more marked.

It is now extending up to mid-tropospheric level. According to Skymet Weather, cloud configuration is indicating that low pressure area is likely to form shortly over the same area.

Thereafter as reiterated by Skymet, the low pressure system would gradually intensify into depression during next 48 to 72 hours and possibly also into the first cyclone of the season.

In wake of this, multi layer cloud mass has already covered Sri Lanka and adjoining South Coastal Tamil Nadu. Coastal parts of the state are already reporting cloudy weather.

Rain may start over Sri Lanka any time now, while coastal parts of India will start receiving rain Sunday onwards.

Due to this system, weather conditions are now favourable for the onset of Southwest Monsoon over Andaman and Nicobar Islands in span of next 3-4 days.

Updated on May 13, 2016 12:45 PM (IST): Low pressure area likely in Bay of Bengal

The cyclonic circulation in South and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a well-marked low pressure area during next 24 hours.

The area of intense convection is centered at 7°N and 86°E and is expected to shift in west-northwest direction. According to Skymet Weather, weather conditions are quite favourable for strengthening of the system.

Along with adequate cloud configuration, the vertical wind shear is also weak suggesting the intensification of the cyclonic circulation into a low-pressure area by May 14.

The system has full potential of turning into a depression and possibly into the first cyclonic storm of pre-Monsoon season.

Further as the system moves forward, it will start affecting the weather over Indian coastline. As per the meteorologist at Skymet Weather, such intense weather systems govern the wind flow over large area of around 100 kilometers.

Tamil Nadu including the capital city of Chennai may see some heavy showers along with high velocity winds after 48 hours. Coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha will also get affected.

This system will also be responsible for ushering in the Monsoon 2016 ahead of its scheduled date of arrival.

Earlier the two cyclonic circulations had emerged in Southwest and Southeast Bay of Bengal, respectively. Later on, both the systems had merged together as characteristics of these strong systems are such that they cannot exist individually.
