Low Pressure Area gives three digit rains over Kolkata

Low Pressure Area gives three digit rains over KolkataThe month of September did not bring good news for Kolkata during its initial days. In fact, the City of Joy had only been receiving light to moderate rains with no sign of heavy showers. This no show of good rains was attributed to the absence of a significant weather system.

A few days ago, a Monsoon system had developed in the North Bay of Bengal in the form of a cyclonic circulation. Furthermore, the system intensified into a Low Pressure Area while moving inland. At present, the Low is stationed over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining areas.

Due to the weather system, Kolkata has recorded extremely heavy rains. During the last 21 hours between 8:30 am on Monday to 5:30 am today, the capital city of West Bengal has recorded a whopping 132 mm of rainfall.

These Monsoon rains are expected to continue for at least two to three days. While the rains will be between moderate to heavy, the possibility of a few very heavy to extremely heavy rainy spells cannot be ruled out during this period.

With just six days gone, Kolkata has been able to receive over 180 mm of rain against its monthly average of 312.4 mm. Due to the presence of the Low Pressure Area, it seems that Kolkata will be able to reach its monthly mean soon enough.
