Under the influence of a persistent cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal (BoB), a low-pressure area has formed over southwest BoB, off North Tamil Nadu and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh. The system has reached up to mid-levels of the atmosphere. Also, a north-south trough is marked along the coastline, through this low-pressure area extending up to west-central BoB. With these systems, widespread rains are likely over the South Peninsula, covering all the five sub-divisions of the northeast monsoon, over the next about 5 days.

North Tamil Nadu and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh have received moderate to heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours. Kavali and Nellore in Andhra Pradesh received 50mm and 37mm rainfall and Minambakkam and Nungambakkam in Tamil Nadu recorded 57mm and 36mm rainfall, till today morning. Fairly widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy rainfall is expected over these two pockets, today also. Kavali has received another 52mm of rainfall till the afternoon hours. The rainfall belt will extend to cover Ongole, Kancheepuram, Tambaram, Puducherry, Cuddalore and Karaikal.

As the weather system moves westward, the spread of rainfall will increase further. Fairly widespread rainfall is likely over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, Rayalaseema, and South Interior Karnataka over the next 4-5 days. Rains will also reach to North and Coastal Karnataka and Goa during this period. The intensity of rainfall will be more over the interiors of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, more so, between the 13th and 15th November. Isolated places will have heavy to very heavy rainfall during this period.

Heavy rainfall is likely to lash the cities like Chennai, Madurai, Trichy, Salem, Coimbatore, Puducherry, Nellore, Bapatla, Ongole, Tirupati, Chittoor, Anantapur, Bengaluru, Mysuru, Hassan, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Honavar, Mangalore, Karwar and Goa.  The weather activity will reduce on 18th Nov and broad clearance is expected from 19th Nov onwards.
