Long rainy spell approaching Gujarat

Rain in GujaratThe performance of Southwest Monsoon was very good in Gujarat during the months of June and July. Saurashtra and Kutch received excess Monsoon rains. Rest of Gujarat received normal rains.

In the month of June, Cyclone Ashobaa (around June 10) and a deep depression (around June 25) brought good rains in the state. In July, on and off rains continued and towards the fag end of the month a deep depression was instrumental in giving very good rains. Since then no active weather system has affected Gujarat.

Monsoon remained subdued in Gujarat throughout August. Weather remained almost dry till about September 10. A cyclonic circulation over Northwest Arabian Sea off South Gujarat and North Coastal Maharashtra started affecting weather in the state from September 11. The rainy spell lasted for about 3 to 4 days.

At present there is a depression over East Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Chhattisgarh region. It is moving in a west/northwesterly direction. By tomorrow, September 18, Southern parts of Gujarat will start receiving good showers. Places like Surat, Valsad and Navsari are likely to witness a rainy spell. Thereafter, effect of the depression will become more prominent over entire Gujarat. Some places may receive heavy to very heavy rain. According to Skymet, the spell of heavy showers will last till September 20. Intensity of rainfall will decrease on September 21 and the state will go dry from the next day.

Monsoon rainfall deficiency will come down significantly in Gujarat. Saurashtra and Gujarat at present have received 6% less rainfall than normal. After the upcoming spell of rainfall this region will record surplus Monsoon rains.
