August 7, 2015 12:27 PM |

Rain in peninsular IndiaAs per Skymet Weather’s early estimate for Southwest Monsoon 2015, below normal and/or deficient rainfall was expected in peninsular India. Out of the four regions, this pocket has been persistently receiving below normal rainfall. As of today, with a rainfall deficiency of 21%, it remains the most deficit portion of the country this season.

Peninsular India mainly includes the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and other islands and oceanic territories. This year, all the pockets have not been performing well in the region.

Out of the above mentioned places, heaviest rainfall has been observed along coastal Karnataka and Kerala region. But as the normal rainfall figures in this particular region are too high, cumulative rainfall figures are pulled down despite good amounts of rain.

A few parts in this region have performed decently in terms of rainfall received during Monsoon. Coastal Andhra Pradesh currently maintains a rainfall excess of 11%, having recorded 324 m rain against an average of 291 mm. Also, rainfall recorded in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry region stands at 3% below than normal. Also, south interior Karnataka is currently maintaining a rainfall figure of (-9%). The most deficit parts in this region have been Rayalaseema (-34%) and north interior Karnataka (-47%).

It must be noted that light to moderate rain has been witnessed in this region in the last one week. As a result, marginal improvement in rainfall figures has been observed over the last few days. As per Skymet, light rain is likely to continue over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema over the next two days. But north interior Karnataka may not receive good rains. The intensity of rain will be less in interior parts over the next 4 to 5 days.
