Updated on September 20, 2015: Light to moderate rainfall to continue over Gujarat for next 48 hours
The months of June and July were excellent for Gujarat in terms of rainfall received. A few weather systems such as Cyclone Ashobaa, and two deep depressions (one each in June and July), gave heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over Saurashtra and Gujarat.

As a result, July ended with a surplus of 42% for Saurashtra and an excess of 11% for Gujarat. Thereafter, subdued rainfall activity was witnessed over the entire state of Gujarat as no significant weather system emerged in August. Thus, August ended with a surplus of 2% for Saurashtra and a deficiency of 24% for Gujarat region.

The month of September remained almost dry for the state of Gujarat. However, since last two to three days, rain has picked up over Gujarat and Saurashtra. These recent rains are due to a depression that has weakened into a well-marked low over Saurashtra and Kutch. Healthy amounts of rain have been observed in various parts of Gujarat since last few days. In last 24 hours, Surat recorded 215 mm, Amreli 71.6 mm, Rajkot 27 mm, Bhuj 25 mm, and Veraval recorded 23 mm of rain.

Now, this well-marked low pressure area is expected to move in the northerly direction, but it will continue to affect Saurashtra and Kutch for another 48 hours. North and Central parts of Gujarat will receive fairly widespread light to moderate rain with isolated heavy showers at one or two places. The intensity of rain over South Gujarat will reduce, but scattered rainfall will continue over this part of the state.

As of September 19, Gujarat region maintains a deficit of 28% and Saurashtra a deficit of 5%. As per Skymet Meteorology Division in India, in another two days, rainfall figures for Saurashtra and Kutch region are likely to turn positive, and rain deficiency over Gujarat may come down to normal.
