Light to moderate rain in the Western Ghats for at least a week

July 29, 2019 5:56 PM |

Western Ghats of India

The Western Ghats of the country is one of the rainiest pockets during the Monsoon season. Close to 25% of the rain in the country comes from the Western Ghats during the Monsoon season. Coastal Karnataka is the rainiest pocket which is followed by Konkan and Goa and then Kerala.

If the Western Ghats and the northeast Indian states reach their normal during the Southwest Monsoon, then the country’s normal is almost achieved.

This season so far, different shades of Monsoon have been seen wherein Konkan and Goa have been the rainiest region followed by Coastal Karnataka and then Kerala.

Presently, Konkan and Goa is excess by 24%, Coastal Karnataka is in normal category and is deficient by just 10% (+/- 19 considered normal) while Kerala is deficient by 29%.

Konkan and Goa including Mumbai have already exceeded their monthly normal by big margins. Rather, Ratnagiri, Alibag, and Dahanu have far exceeded their monthly normal.

Meanwhile, rains have been far and few for the state of Kerala and they were of short duration. Hence, we can say that if any kind of major deficiency is reflected in the Western Ghats then an impact will be visible on pan India’s average.

As per our experts, rains will be poorer for the next one week especially over Kerala. While Konkan and Goa including Mumbai are likely to see light to moderate rains and in between heavy rains can be seen on one or two odd days.

Meanwhile sporadic or intermittent rains will continue in Coastal Karnataka. Light to moderate rains will be a sight in Karwar, Mangaluru, and Honnavar.
