Light Showers In Delhi, Extreme Heat Unlikely This Week

Month of April has started on a balmy note for the national capital.  Mercury levels, both maximum and minimum,  remained suppressed to close below normal for the last 2 days.  Unlike, central and southern parts of the country living with a threat of heat wave, Delhi continue to stay soothingly warm during day and gentle nip in the early hours. No spike is likely in the day temperatures during this week. At best, the maximum temperature may rise marginally but still stop short of normal (35-36°C). It is nearly a repeat of last year when the mercury was arrested at 34°C or less during the first week of April.

A western disturbance is moving across the mountains and another one will arrive on 05thApril. There is feeble cyclonic circulation over North Rajasthan in the lower levels and an east-west trough extending up to Delhi and neighbourhood. It is looking very innocuous feature but still can not be ignored on account of heat building up over contiguous areas of the state. As such, there is a bit of support from the western disturbance and coupled with shear zone of trough, may trigger some showers. Weather activity, if any, will be brief, intermittent and fleeting. Light rain or drizzle can be expected during late night, in some parts of the national capital.

There is another western disturbance following the current one and arriving on 05thApril over Western Himalayas. Once again, the capital city will be at the far end of activity circle. However, pre monsoon season is truant for very small scale or even local weather activity. Keeping that in mind, there is an outside chance to have a repeat of similar activity, late on 05thApril.

Such minor and limited area weather activity will not influence the temperature profile. Though, no significant drop in the mercury is expected but the cloud cover and small sprinkle will restrict any rise of temperature, as well. Maximum temperature may hover around mid 30’s and minimum could go to high teens. In the absence of any prominent weather system over the plains of North India for the next 5-6 days, temperatures are expected to make seasonal progression and possibly rise to high 30’s, midweek next or later.
