Even with timely onset of Southwest Monsoon along the West Coast and most of southern states, rains remained far and few over the city of Chennai.

However, during the last 24 hours, the Minambakkam Observatory recorded moderate showers of 11 mm, while the Nungambakkam Observatory recorded rains to the tune of 0.3 mm.

According to Skymet Weather, these rains can be attributed to a cyclonic circulation over Northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha Coast. A trough is also extending from this system to North Tamil Nadu Coast. In wake of this, the level of moisture has increased in the atmosphere over the city, which led to formation of convective clouds leading to rainfall over the ‘Gateway to South India’.

As per Weathermen, the weather will remain warm and humid over the city during the next 24 hours, however isolated showers cannot be ruled out.

Maximum temperatures will remain in the range of 35-37°C, while the minimum will be between 27-28°C.

Till date, Chennai has recorded 40.6 mm of rain as compared to its monthly average of 55.8 mm.

Being a rain shadow area, Tamil Nadu including Chennai does not witness much rain during the Southwest Monsoon from June to September. If in case, any strong weather system develops in the near vicinity of Bay of Bengal, then the area get to see some rain activity.
