Since last three to four days, several areas of Gangetic West Bengal have been receiving moderate to heavy Monsoon rains. The Southwest Monsoon also remained active over the entire state of West Bengal. Due to which, many districts of the state, including the capital city, Kolkata, has been experiencing on and off Monsoon showers.

Due to these on and off rains, the mercury level has also curtailed down by 2-3 notches, thereby leading to comfortable and pleasant weather for the residents of the state along with its capital city. Some light spells have even occurred in parts of Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata in the last 24 hours as well.

In a span of last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, the city of Joy recorded a mere 2.6 mm of rainfall. Whereas, in the similar time frame, other cities such as Digha recorded 58.6 mm of rainfall, Bankura 48.3 mm, Burdwan 42.1 mm, Midnapore 26.2 mm, Diamond Harbor 8.2 mm and Asansol 4.3 mm.

These weather conditions can be attributed to a cyclonic circulation which is seen persisting over Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal. Simultaneously, the axis of Monsoon trough is also seen passing through Jharkhand and is now moving across Gangetic West Bengal towards Northwest Bay. Due to the combined effect of these weather systems, Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata may continue to receive scattered light rainfall activities during the next 24 hours.

Thereafter, the rainfall intensity over Kolkata is likely to reduce significantly. As these weather systems are expected to weaken and move away from the region. However, scattered light rains cannot be ruled out a few places over Bankura and Purulia. Until then, the residents of Kolkata and adjoining areas shall continue to enjoy pleasant weather conditions.
