Light rains likely in hot and humid Kolkata, but no relief expected

April 1, 2017 12:20 PM |

Rain in KolkataLike rest of the country, Kolkata has also been battling uneasy and scorching weather conditions. Though day temperatures are settling near normal but high levels of moisture are have increased the discomfort manifolds.

On Friday, day maximum was recorded at 34.1°C, while night temperatures settled at 26.1°C which is a notch above the normal levels.

However, at present, the city is witnessing partly cloudy sky leading to hot and humid weather conditions. The day temperatures are likely to peak by the afternoon that could lead to the development of thunderclouds over Kolkata.

As a result, we can expect one or two short and sharp spell of rain and thundershowers over parts of the city during late afternoon or evening hours of Friday. Moreover, such rains are likely to continue for another 48 hours.

According to Skymet Weather, these hot and humid weather conditions can be attributed the cyclonic circulation marked over North West Bengal. A trough is also extending from this system up to North Coastal Odisha across Gangetic West Bengal.

In wake of these systems, warm southerly winds from Bay of Bengal have been blowing over the region, infusing moisture over Kolkata.

These rains will bring some relief but it would be a momentary relief only. Weathermen predict that day temperatures will once again start rising tomorrow morning.

True to their nature, these pre-Monsoon rains occur during the latter part of the day only and thus, does not impact maximum temperatures. For any major relief from scorching weather, we will have to wait for a strong weather system to develop around or over the region.
