Light rains knocking doors at Bengaluru and Chennai

January 27, 2019 5:07 PM | Skymet Weather Team

The two southern cities of Chennai and Bengaluru are all set to receive rains in the next 24 hours. Bengaluru is likely to receive isolated light rain and thundershower activities today which will carry forward till tomorrow. Chennai may also receive isolated light to very light rain at one or two places in the next 48 hours. Thunderstorm activities might also be witnessed over Chennai.

Reason for these untimely rains can be attributed to the formation of a Confluence Zone developing from South coastal Andhra Pradesh to Kerala across North Tamil Nadu and South Interior Karnataka. Therefore, humid winds from Bay of Bengal will reach over Tamil Nadu and South Interior Karnataka including the cities of Bengaluru and Chennai, giving rain and thundershower activities over these places.

Though this is not a very rainy period for these stations but whenever any weather system develops over South Bay of Bengal (which is very rare during the month of January), Chennai and North coastal Tamil Nadu receive rain. Also, sometimes, due to a North-south trough which extends from Central parts of the country to Tamil Nadu or South Interior Karnataka, rains might occur over South and North Interior Karnataka as well as over parts of Tamil Nadu.

This time, a Confluence Zone will be instrumental for rains over these two areas. The intensity of rains, however, will not be very high. Moderate to heavy rains are ruled out and the rains will not be very widespread. Day temperatures might fall by 2 to 3 degrees over both Bengaluru and Chennai, due to the rains.
