Light rains in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Northeast Monsoon to end on deficit note

December 27, 2016 12:03 PM | Skymet Weather Team

After remaining dry for the last few days, fresh spell of rains is approaching Tamil Nadu. However, intensity of rains will be light in nature.

As reiterated by Skymet Weather, a trough of low is prevailing over Southwest Bay of Bengal. The system will be responsible for giving scattered rain and thundershowers over the southern parts of Tamil Nadu, while North Coastal Tamil Nadu will record isolated light rains only.

Chennai is also likely to see light rains during the next 24 hour but due to localised factors. According to weathermen, the intensity of rains will be more over the southern parts, however, wind pattern will also be affected over the northern parts, which will be lead to some showers over these areas.

Not only this, this could be the last weather system to affect Chennai and Tamil Nadu during the Northeast Monsoon, which comes to an end on December 31.

Northeast Monsoon to end on deficit note

Northeast Monsoon has remained subdued for most of the time of the season that spans from October to December.
Rainfall across Tamil Nadu still remains deficient in spite of three cyclones and numerous weather systems developing over South Bay of Bengal.

After its much delayed onset in October, the Monsoon failed to give any rains over the state during November which records over 50% of its annual rainfall. Chennai recorded mere 50 mm of rain as compared to its monthly mean of 407 mm.

Thereafter, December started on a rainy note and saw some good showers on account of two back to back cyclone- Nada and Vardah. With the help of these systems, Chennai had recorded 335.8 mm of rain so far, surpassing its monthly average of 191 mm.

After the passage of these systems, the region has not seen any significant rainfall. Moreover, with no time left and no weather system in offing, we expect the season to end on highly deficit note this year.
