Light Rains During This Week For Mumbai, Typical Heavy Rains Unlikely Next Week As Well

Mumbai has received mostly light monsoon rainfall over the last 2 weeks. Occasionally, the showers were swift and intense but limited to a few areas. Mumbai is unlikely to see any heavy showers this week, and even next week will miss the typical Mumbai downpour, stretching till the month's end. Today, there could be light showers during late evening and night hours, absolutely patchy and fleeting.

Today is Ananta Chaturdashi, marked as the last ten-day-long Ganesh Chaturthi festival, when the devotees bid adieu to the deity Ganesha by immersing his idols in water bodies. The festivities are unlikely to be hampered, and if at all, only light rainfall is expected, and that too during late in the evening and night, without clashing with the processions.

Earlier, Mumbai had soaking rains in the month of July. June was a deficit, and even August fell short of the target. September seems to be on the same track and is likely to have a monthly shortfall. The city, so far, has recorded 171mm of rainfall against the modest monthly normal of 341.4mm. Rains are likely to remain light and patchy during this week. The weather activity may pick up next week, but not adequate enough to fill the large gap.

There is a monsoon depression over Chhattisgarh and likely to move over Madhya Pradesh. This weather system is inconsequential for Mumbai. In the wake of this depression, another monsoon system, albeit mild, is likely to evolve over the Bay of Bengal. Though it is a little early to preempt the track, timelines, and intensity of that system, there is still some hope of retreating monsoon showers over Mumbai.
