Tamil Nadu falls in a rain shadow area that is why during Southwest Monsoon the state as well as Chennai receives scanty rain in comparison to Northeast Monsoon period, as the winds which pick up moisture from Arabian Sea drains it over the Western Ghats.
The weather over Chennai remained almost dry since June 27 however light rain did show up on July 3. Now the weathermen at Skymet Weather expect light rain to occur over few parts during the next 2 days. These rains will due to localized phenomenon.
We do not expect any significant increase in rain over the city. However by July 11 or 12, there may be marginal increase in rain activity over Chennai and the nearby districts, but heavy showers are still not expected to batter the area.

For the month of June, Chennai has recorded 91.2 mm of rain as compared to its monthly average of 55.9 mm. This shows that the city has exceeded its monthly average mean. The monthly average rainfall for the month of July stands at 103.8 mm. Let’s hope that either the intensity of these rains pick up pace or some heavy showers make an appearance that may benefit the city to beat its monthly mean.
