Light rain to persist in hilly states of India for next 24 hours

April 20, 2015 3:24 PM | Skymet Weather Team

The western disturbance affecting Jammu and Kashmir and other hilly states of India has given fairly widespread, moderate rain with heavy rain in isolated places in last 24 hours. However, as the system is moving away, rainfall intensity is expected to reduce significantly, giving only light rain in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

While several parts of Jammu and Kashmir received heavy rain in last one day, the weather system gave light rain in few parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Places in HP that received rain in last 24 hours include Kullu with 3 mm of rain and Manali with 32 mm of rain. Places in Uttarakhand that received rain include Dehradun with 1.4 mm, Mukteshwar 3.4 mm and Nainital 2 mm of rain. Places that received heavy rain in J&K include Gulmarg with 76 mm and Kupwara 69 mm of rain.

Concern for farmers

Heavy rainfall during the past few days has increased the worry of farmers and fruit growers as it may dampen the harvest of key fruits. The unprecedented floods in September last year had caused widespread damage in Jammu and Kashmir which has still not been reinforced. The weak embankment of the Jhelum River and ongoing rain is, therefore, a cause of concern for farmers.

Weather for next 24 hours

As the Western Disturbance moves away from Jammu and Kashmir and other hilly states, day and night temperatures are likely to rise in these parts. As the passage of the weather system gives way to the dry westerly winds, dry weather is likely to persist in Jammu and Kashmir and other adjoining states.
