Monsoon showers have been light and patchy for the last 3-4 days over Delhi and the suburbs.  The monsoon trough had been keeping a safe distance from the national capital and therefore, the drop in monsoon activity. The base observatory at Safdarjung recorded just 0.2mm, the Airport observatory 2mm and the Lodi Road office trace of rainfall in the past 24 hours. A similar pattern is likely to continue for two more days, today and tomorrow and an uptick, thereafter.

A deep depression is marked over the Bay of Bengal. It is likely to stay over the ocean for the next 24 hours but come closer to the coast. Subsequently, the system will move over land and travel across central parts of the country. With this, the monsoon trough will once again oscillate and come closer to Delhi. Rather, in the lower levels, between 3,000 and 5,000 feet, the trough will pass through and through the capital city. This will lead to an increase in the spread and intensity of showers.

As the depression crosses the coast and moves inland, it will travel across Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. The weather system will possibly reach Southwest Uttar Pradesh and adjoining North Madhya Pradesh, the day after tomorrow. This will be the time when the monsoon trough is closest to Delhi. The weather system will meander and spend a lot of time around this region. Moderate rain and thundershowers are likely for Delhi/ NCR between 11th and 13th September. Cloudy sky, moderate breeze and few spells of intermittent rain will usher in comfortable weather conditions and drop the mercury levels to the low 30s. The minimum temperature will stay in the mid 20’s. Rains will reduce once again from 14th September onward and become least between 15th and 17th September.
