After witnessing lowest minimums of season, temperatures over both the states of Punjab and Haryana are now witnessing an increasing trend. In wake of successive Western Disturbances along with the induced Cyclonic Circulation over North Rajasthan and adjoining Punjab and Haryana, minimums have increased over these states.
Moreover, although light rains had taken place over parts of Punjab and Haryana on New Year’s evening, but weather of both states had remained more or less dry throughout months of November and December.
Earlier, right from last week of December till beginning of January, with continuously dropping minimums, many districts of Punjab and Haryana were experiencing Cold Wave conditions. In fact, a few extra layers of jackets and scarves had made their way into people's cupboards in these states. However, all thanks to successive Western Disturbances, which have now increased minimums thereby abating Cold Wave conditions from the states and bringing a sigh of relief to residents.
At present, an active Western Disturbance is approaching Jammu & Kashmir, which would soon induce a Cyclonic Circulation over Punjab and Haryana. Thus, we expect scattered light to moderate rains to take place over these states, most probably by evening and night of January 5. Moreover, these on and off rains are expected to continue till January 6. As a result of this, day temperatures will witness a significant drop.
Further, chances of hailstorm activities in some parts of Punjab and Haryana cannot be ruled out. Hailstorm occurs when during winters, freezing level becomes very low and convective clouds develop with a height of 6 to 8 km. At present, freezing level is less than 3 km.
Further, this situation is expected to improve January 7 onward, when rains will stop. However, dense to very dense fog may appear over many parts of both states. Once this situation occurs, minimums will again start dropping and Cold Wave conditions will make a comeback around January 7.
