Light rain in Chennai to continue

Both the observatories of Chennai have been receiving contrasting rains from the last 2-3 days. The last 24 hours were no different for the city. While the Nungambakkam Observatory had witnessed light rains in the last day, the Minambakkam Observatory did not record any showers.

In terms of rains for the other regions of Tamil Nadu, the interior and the north coastal districts of the state are receiving light to moderate rains since the last few days. However, the weather of the southern region of the state is comparatively dry.

Within the span of 24 hours from 08:30 am as on Monday, Tiruttani recorded 34 mm of rains, Vellore 11.1 mm, Chennai's Nungambakkam Observatory witnessed 7.1 mm of rains, Thanjavur 4 mm and Salem recorded light rains of 3.9 mm.

As of now, scattered light to moderate rains is expected to continue over the interior parts of the state for the next 2-3 days. Chennai may witness light spells with few thunderstorm activities taking place during the afternoon and evening hours.

Though the rain intensity may increase over the Chennai and the city can brace for some good rains from October 12 and may continue until October 15.

As per Skymet Weather, these rains will be due to the formation of a feeble trough over coastal Tamil Nadu. Another trough which is running from Maharashtra to South Interior Karnataka will also influence the rain activity over the interior districts of the state. On the other hand, the southern districts of the state are expected to remain almost dry.

The monthly average rainfall for Chennai city stands at 315.6 mm and as on today, the state capital has recorded 105 mm of rains. However, some good rains are essential for Chennai to be able to surpass its daunting monthly target in the remaining days of the month.
