After a prolonged dry spell, the city of Chennai received light rains yesterday. In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, the observatory of Nungambakkam received 4 mm rain while Meenambakkam has received 3 mm of rain already.
Although the rains were light but the city has managed to surpass monthly average of Chennai that stands at 3.4 mm.
This is the second rainy episode in the month of February, with earlier i.e. on February 4 recording very light rains. Although interior Tamil Nadu kept on receiving on and off light rains, but the intensity and frequency of these rain episodes remained nominal throughout. On the other hand, areas of Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra Pradesh have also received isolated rains on a few occasions. During the last 24 hours, scattered rains occurred over Coastal Andhra Pradesh as well.
Looking at the rainfall figures, the state of Tamil Nadu is still deficient by 84%, Coastal Andhra Pradesh is deficient by 42%. Whereas, Rayalaseema is largely excess at +114%.
At present, a trough is extending from Jharkhand to Interior Tamil Nadu across Andhra Pradesh. Therefore, we expect scattered rains to occur over Coastal Andhra Pradesh as well as over parts of Tamil Nadu during the next two hours.
Chennai may also receive light rain activities. But these rains will not be widely spread affecting only a few localities. These short-term rains will be unable to bring much difference in the already rain deficient states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
