After a prolonged dry spell, Chennai observed light rain on May 27. Now pre-Monsoon showers have once again intensified over the Peninsular India including Tamil Nadu adjoining Karnataka. Interior districts of Tamil Nadu received good amount of rain in the last 24 hours. Cuddalore received 16 mm rain and Karaikal observed 20 mm. On the other hand, Tiruchirappalli received a good 43 mm rain.
The impact of this pre-Monsoon rain has also been felt over Chennai where a sudden drop of maximum temperature was observed. The day temperature from 38°C dropped to 31°C after the city witnessed pre-Monsoon showers in the form of light rain.
A trough from Jharkhand and Bihar is extending up to the interiors parts of Tamil Nadu, across Chhattisgarh and Telangana. Due to this system, interior parts of Tamil Nadu will continue to receive rain. Also, the possibility of light rain or thundershowers cannot be ruled out over Chennai.
Heatwave conditions are almost over for the Chennai region. Now, the city can expect marginal relief from intense heat and residents can heave a sigh of relief after reeling under hot weather conditions for a long period of time.
By the end of the month, the temperatures are expected to subside even further as Monsoon rain will start over Kerala and some parts of Tamil Nadu. Furthermore, Chennai is expected to receive good rain on June 1.
