Light Chennai rains to continue for next 24 hours

Chennai has been witnessing sporadic light rain and thundershowers for the last few days. As per weathermen, these rains will continue over the Tamil Nadu city for the next 24 hours as well.

All thanks to the presence of a trough that is extending from Rayalaseema to Gulf of Mannar. Due to this system, the moisture levels have increased over the area, resulting in the development of thunderclouds. These clouds have been giving rain and thundershowers over the city along with some other districts of Tamil Nadu.

In a span of last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Saturday, Meenabakkam observatory recorded 7 mm of rains, while Nungambakkam observatory received a mere of 0.1 mm rains.

As per Skymet Weather, intermittent light rains will continue over Chennai and light to moderate rains are likely over other areas of Tamil Nadu for the next 24 hours. Also, isolated heavy spells cannot be ruled out over northern parts of Tamil Nadu.

With these rains, Chennai will continue to witness humid afternoon but morning and evening will remain comfortable.

Usually, Tamil Nadu and Chennai do not observe any significant rains during the Southwest Monsoon. The reason it lies in the rain shadow area. On the other hand, the state and its capital record some really good spells during the Northeast Monsoon.

Till August 12, Chennai has recorded 32.8 mm of rainfall as against its monthly average of 126.8 mm.
