Chennai post

After reeling under a few dry days, Chennai rains finally appeared in the city. The Monsoon rains that had remained absent from occurring over the city were a brief respite from the prevailing sultry weather.

In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Monday, Chennai’s Nungambakkam Observatory recorded 0.6 mm of light rains. On the contrary, the Minambakkam Observatory did not record any spells in the similar time span.

During the similar time frame, the other districts of Tamil Nadu that recorded some rains include Coonoor 19.8 mm of rains, Tondi 8.3 mm, Parangipettai 4 mm, and Vellore witnessed 0.7 mm of light showers.

As per Skymet Weather, a north south trough was running from the central parts of the country to South Tamil Nadu across South Interior Karnataka. This weather system was responsible for giving good rains over interior Tamil Nadu but Chennai being in the rain shadow area was receiving occasional showers only.

Now, this trough has shifted towards the West Coast and therefore, rains are likely to reduce over most parts of the state including Chennai. But, due to warm temperatures and high humidity levels, development of thunderclouds giving short rainy spells are a chance particularly during the early morning or late afternoon hours.

However, these showers will be patchy and short lived, covering smaller areas and will not be widespread in nature.
