Chennai rains usually remain on the backseat during the Southwest Monsoon season. The city of Chennai lies in the rain shadow area and some good rains are observed only when a break Monsoon period or weak Monsoon conditions are observed over other parts of the country.
When Monsoon rains take a backseat over most parts of the country and rains remain confined to only a few parts, then rainfall activity over the Southern Peninsula increases and the rain shadow areas witness good showers.
The city of Chennai has been receiving light rainfall activity for the past few days. In fact, a spell of moderate rainfall was also recorded on July 31 over the Minambakkam observatory. During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, the Nungambakkam observatory observed 3 mm of rains while the Minambakkam observatory witnessed 2 mm of rainfall.
Now, also, the city of Chennai is expected to receive light rainfall activity today as well due to an off shore trough which is persisting along the East Coast. Other parts of Coastal Tamil Nadu will also see some rainfall activity during the same time frame.
As far as the temperatures are concerned, maximums will settle in the mid 30s while minimums will remain in the mid 20s. Humidity levels are expected to remain on the higher side.
