While the weak Northeast Monsoon does not show any signs of revival, Chennai and some parts of Tamil Nadu have received rain in last 24 hours that has been instrumental in bringing a respite to the parched city of Tamil Nadu.

Chennai that has been staring at a rain deficit of over 80% this Northeast Monsoon season can look forward to light rain along with moderate spells till the weekend. A trough is moving across south Tamil Nadu coast. Along with this weather system, north easterly winds are also prevailing along the coast. Due to the combination of these two, Chennai and other parts of the state have received light to moderate rain in last 24 hours.

While Nungambakkam Observatory in Chennai recorded 17.9 mm of rain in 24 hours, other cities such as Pamban received 2.6 mm, Nagapattinam – 6.4 mm and Karaikal received 1 mm of rain in the same span.

In the absence of any significant weather system forming in either near the Andaman Sea or south Bay of Bengal, Northeast Monsoon remained weak this year. The moisture content was also weak and so Chennai just managed to receive close to 50 mm of rain so far in November in comparison to normal monthly rainfall of 407 mm.

The situation is similarly alarming for other parts of Tamil Nadu that are also observing high rain deficit owing to scanty or no rainfall this year.
