Lesser known paradise on Earth- Shillong

April 2, 2014 2:40 PM |

Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya, one of the smallest states in the country. This state is mostly hilly and has an undulating terrain. The nearest air and train link is 103 km away in Guwahati. Shillong also has a small airport at Umroi, 30 km from Shillong.

From scenic beauty to pubs and clubs, this place has it all. In fact it is fondly called the drinker’s paradise as the cost of liquor is amazingly low due to tax structure of alcohol in this state.

This place is popularly called Scotland of the East as the rolling hills of the town reminded the European settlers of Scotland. It’s a picturesque place and is comprised of three pockets- Lower Shillong, Upper Shillong and Shillong Peak.

Badapani, as the name suggests is a huge manmade lake in Shillong, which is the main source of water for the neighbouring areas. It is also known as the Umiam Lake and resembles the Lochs or lakes of Scotland.

Upper Shillong houses the Eastern Air Command of the Indian Airforce and the elephant falls. The name was given by British as there was a rock beside the fall which resembled an elephant. No elephant-like stone is present there anymore as Meghalaya underwent a tremendous change during the earthquake of 1897.

Shillong Peak is the highest point in Meghalaya and is host to radar station of the Indian Air force. From this point one can enjoy breath-taking view of the entire city.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, it does not snow here as Shillong is situated south of the Assam valley and is not a part of the huge Himalayan range.

Weather in Shillong in coming months

Weather in the pre-monsoon season remains cool with extremely pleasant nights. Days could be a little uncomfortable as the sun is generally scorching due to its elevation. Maximums remain in low-twenties and minimums do not rise above 15°C.

Monsoon arrives here by the first week of June and withdrawsby 10th of October. Tourist should always keep an umbrella handy as Shillong receives torrential rainfall during this season.

The unique tranquility of this place is heightened by cleanliness of the roads, lakes and comfortable climate throughout all seasons of the year. Shillong is definitely a place of beauty and comfort and minimal air pollution with no dust storm as such.
