July 16, 2015 6:01 PM |

Rain in MumbaiMonsoon 2015 performed well in the month of June and ended up with an overall countrywide surplus rainfall of 16%. July is also expected to perform well and record normal rainfall. Here’s a look at performance so far and forecast for Southwest Monsoon in the major metropolitan cities of India:

Monsoon in Kolkata

The onset of Southwest Monsoon in Kolkata was delayed this year. Consequently, the city did not receive any rain during the first 10 days of June. But, with few spells of rain Kolkata managed to receive 232 mm of rain, against the normal average of 283.5 in the month of June. On the contrary, July has received 589 mm of rain so far against the monthly average of 400 mm.

We are just halfway through July and the city of joy has already reached the second highest rainfall figure in last 10 years. The highest rainfall (715.5 mm) in last 10 years was recorded in 2007. With forecast of more showers in the offing, the city could easily catch up with the highest rainfall figure of July since 2005.

Monsoon in Delhi

In the month of June, rainfall figure in Delhi fell short of the monthly average of 77 mm. Just like Monsoon in Kolkata, July started on a promising note and the Safdarjung observatory has already received 215 mm of rain, surpassing the monthly average of 214 mm.

Good showers are likely in Delhi-NCR during the coming weekend, in view of the Western Disturbance. In fact, the Monsoon trough is also likely to move southwards and lie near Delhi within next 24 hours. The highest July rainfall of last 10 years is 340.5 mm. Attaining this figure looks far-fetched but Delhi could surely record the third highest rainfall of 239 mm.

Monsoon in Chennai

It doesn’t rain much in Chennai during the Southwest Monsoon period as the capital of Tamil Nadu receives more rain during Northeast Monsoon. This year in June, Chennai received around 50 mm of rain, very close to the monthly average of 56 mm.
The monthly average for July is just 100 mm in Chennai and it has received just 17 mm so far. No significant spell of rain is likely here in the coming days as well.

A special feature of Chennai is that the city receives good showers when Monsoon goes weak in rest of the country. August is the rainiest month for Chennai during the four month-long Monsoon season. So we have to wait and watch if the city ends up with normal rains in Monsoon 2105.
