This year, winter rains have remained almost absent from entire Northwest India. As a result, northwestern plains are at present rain deficient.
Usually, with the approach of an active Western Disturbance, rains occur over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, North Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh. However, this year, due to less number of active Western Disturbances, no significant circulation has formed over Haryana and Rajasthan so far. The result is dry and warm weather over entire region.
In the coming week too, no major change in the weather is likely and these areas will continue to remain arid. Moreover, with the approach of a fresh Western Disturbance, most probably by today, winds would change their directions from northwest to southeast.
These winds would contribute in minimums to increase marginally, thereby keeping the winter chill away for the next 3-4 days .
After the Western Disturbance moves away eastwards, temperatures of Northwest plains will drop again by 2℃-3℃, bringing in slight winter chill. Due to this fall in minimums, light woolens would be required during morning and evening hours.
However, residents need to wait a little more for severe winters to set in completely. This will be possible only when heavy snowfall commences over Western Himalayas. Although, the current Western Disturbance may result in some scattered snowfall over Jammu and Kashmir, but this activity will not be enough to make a significant decrease in the temperatures over plains of the country.
