The last ten days have been dominated by heat wave conditions across the country. And weather activity in terms of good rainfall has been rare, causing the week from May 21 to May 27 to end on a deficient note of 33%. The first two weeks from April 30 to May 6 and May 7 to May 13 were also deficient by 30% and 22%, respectively.
According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, barring the northeast region, rainfall in the entire country has been deficient this week. North and South India have been the worst hit regions.
Rainfall in North India
For instance, Rainfall in the sub-division of Uttarakhand has been 2.1 mm against the weekly average of 15.2 mm, which is 86% deficient. Haryana and Delhi have been deficient by 99%, while Punjab is short by 97%. Himachal Pradesh is the only sub-division in North India where rainfall has been surplus, that too only marginally. Himachal Pradesh has observed 13.3 mm of rain against the weekly average of 13.1 mm.
Rainfall in South India
In South India where heat wave condition was the worst and intense, the deficiency has been high. According to the data available with Skymet, the sub-division of North Interior Karnataka has received 0.8 mm of rain against the weekly average of 17.2 mm. In Rayalaseema the situation is much worse with 0.2 mm of rain being observed against 16.4 mm. Tamil Nadu with 0.7 mm of rain against 14.5 mm is also deficient by 95%.
Rainfall in Northeast India
Northeast India is the only region where some surplus rain has been observed due to continuous rainfall activity this week. For example, the sub-division of Arunachal Pradesh with 109.3 mm of rain against the weekly average of 54.4 mm is excess by a whopping 101%. Assam and Meghalaya is surplus by 42% with 98.3 mm of rain against 69.2 mm. The NMMT region (Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura) observed normal rainfall of 53.8 mm.
Out of the 36 sub-divisions in the country Scanty Rainfall (-60% to -99%) has been observed in 24 sub-divisions. There are only 3 sub-divisions of excess rainfall this week, out of which two are from Northeast India.
