Updated on September 15, 2015: Monsoon rain to lash parts of Gujarat

Southern parts of Gujarat have been receiving moderate Monsoon rains for last few days owing to a feeble cyclonic circulation that was persisting over Arabian Sea. Places like Rajkot, Surat and Amreli were some of the areas to have received rain in last two to three days. According to Skymet, rain is likely to continue for another 24 hours over southern and central parts of the state.

Thereafter, the weather is likely to go dry for a couple of days. Though Monsoon rains will return to Gujarat around 18th September and continue till 22nd September. This rain will be attributed to the well marked low pressure area which is present over Bay of Bengal and is likely to move westwards towards North Maharashtra and South Gujarat by September 18. Along with this weather system, a trough extending from Haryana upto Gujarat, across Rajasthan, will also contribute to good Monsoon rains over Gujarat. Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Porbandar and Vadodra are some of the areas to receive rain during this period.

Updated on September 11, 2015: Last spell of Monsoon rain likely in Gujarat

The Saurashtra and Kutch region has seen some very good rains this Monsoon season. The Gujarat region has however witnessed less rain. For instance, Monsoon rain in the sub-division of Saurashtra and Kutch was excess by 15% during the month of June, while Gujarat region was deficient by a whopping 32%.

On June 9 and June 10 cyclone Ashobaa had given very good rains in the state. One June 25 a deep depression affected Gujarat again giving widespread moderate to heavy rains. Many parts of the state were flooded in this downpour.

And the last spell of heavy rain was observed between July 26 and July 28 which was caused due to a deep depression over Rajasthan and Gujarat region. Since then, rainfall activity in the entire state has been subdued. For example Gujarat region was deficient by 24% in August, while Saurashtra and Kutch was marginally above normal at +2%.

Now a cyclonic circulation is developing over North Arabian Sea off Gujarat and Maharashtra coast due to which scattered light to moderate rain is expected over Gujarat region during the next 2 to 3 days.

Rainfall activity will be more over southern coastal districts such as Valsad, Navsari, Surat, Bhavnagar, Amreli, Junagadh and Rajkot. This may be the last spell of rain over Gujarat as the Southwest Monsoon has started withdrawing from West Rajasthan. By next week it is expected to withdraw from Saurashtra and Kutch as well.

October is known as second summer for Gujarat as the temperatures in the state rise to touch the 40 degrees Celsius mark at some places like Bhuj and Naliya due to clear skies and bright sunshine.
