Financial capital Mumbai is still struggling to record 1st three digit 24hr rainfall of monsoon 2022. Practically, it has rained everyday after onset of monsoon over the city on 09thJune. However, typical Mumbai monsoon rains have eluded the city, this season so far. Conditions are favorable to have one such spell tomorrow, which could be the last chance in this month to score a century rainfall.
Since the year 2000, Mumbai recorded century rainfall in 24hr at least once, in most years. However, it skipped the event in 2002, 2009, 2012, 2014, 2017 and 2020. Contrarily, it registered this feat on 3-4 occasions in few years like 2021(3), 2016(3), 2015(3), 2008(3), 2007(3) and 2003(4).
This season, the city has recorded mere 189mm of rainfall against the monthly normal of 493.1mm. The highest 24hr rainfall was 41mm on 11thJune. As of now, this is one of the lowest in the last 7 years. The lowest monthly rainfall was 87.3mm in the year 2014 which incidentally happened to be a drought year for the country.
Meteorological conditions are building up to have heavy rains tomorrow, for the city and suburbs. The cyclonic circulation in the Arabian Sea, off South Gujarat coast persists. In addition, a north-south trough runs from South Gujarat to Coastal Karnataka. Under the combined influence of these 2 systems, Konkan and South Gujarat will experience heavy rains over the next 2 days. Mumbai will witness only moderate showers today(24th) and day after(26th). In between, heavy rains are expected to lash the city and fringes on 25thJune. There is fair amount of chance to register downpour of 3 digits, 1st of the season, if so. Remaining days of the month could possibly see just moderate showers, albeit more intense on 29th and 30thJune.
